⟡ BoA became a non-registered 'de facto' creative director at SM Entertainment in 2014. It is important to note that this is likely just an honorary title, a recognition of her contributions and loyalty to the company. She became the first Korean singer to top the Oricon charts and sell millions of albums in Japan.This proved to the Korean music industry that they could expand by tapping into markets outside their domestic borders, and it led to more acts debuting in Japan (e.g. TVXQ!).Her success there is even more significant since:

  • Japan has the 2nd biggest music market in the world, just after the United States. Succeeding there was a big deal for the South Korean music industry, since its population (the total potential domestic market size) was less than half of Japan’s — to illustrate, BoA's 'Valenti' (2003) sold at least 2x more than the bestselling Korean album of 2003.

  • Japan and South Korea have historically had a fraught relationship especially since WW2, to the point that South Korea banned Japanese cultural products for decades. It was only in 1998 that both countries began formally opening themselves to cultural exchange with each other. BoA became the first Korean artist to make it big in Japan in 2002, topping the Oricon charts and selling 1M+ records. Shortly after, she was invited by Japan and South Korea's heads of state to perform at a summit dinner, where she was recognized as an important cultural envoy for both countries.
